The Northwest Edmonton community of Griesbach holds a truly unique history in that it was first developed as a Canadian Forces Base (CFB Griesbach) in the early 1950s. The area remained home to military personal and their families until the early 2000s, when the army base was relocated north of the city to Sturgeon County.

Despite its established status, boasting mature trees and plenty of “old neighbourhood” charm, residential development didn’t begin in this Castle Downs community until the early 1990s – when the former military land was transferred to the Canada Lands Company. As such, Griesbach remains one of Edmonton’s “oldest new communities,” which continues to see new homes cropping up within its boundaries today.

Delton and Eastwood represent two of the oldest communities in Edmonton. Located just north of the downtown core, these dual neighbourhoods amalgamated with the greater city in 1910. Further development was spurred by a local streetcar line, which saw several homes and businesses crop up in and around the area. Boasting quiet streets and unbeatable historic charm, Delton and Eastwood are a “must-see” for anyone looking for a mature neighbourhood with a comfortable community feel.

Did you know? Delton was named after Edward Delegare Grierson, a Canadian Pacific railway employee who went on to own several properties along famed Jasper Ave. Grierson also served as an Edmonton city councillor in the early 1900s.

Quiet, ravine-side living in Edmonton’s central northwest! Grovenor is a highly coveted older neighbourhood first settled in the early 1900s. Thanks to its established status, Grovenor is ripe with charm, full of mature trees, walkable amenities and, of course, scenic ravine views.
